Plant of the Month - Camellias

Updated: May 22, 2023

We celebrate the beauty and elegance of camellias! As the seasons shift and nature unveils its vibrant colors, we are delighted to present a stunning selection of camellias that will enchant any garden or landscape.

First on our list is the ever-popular Camellia japonica for shade loving gardens. Known for its lustrous, glossy leaves and show-stopping blooms, this classic variety is a true garden favorite. With its large, single or double flowers in shades of pink, red, and white, Camellia japonica brings a touch of elegance and grace to any setting. Whether used as a focal point in a garden bed or as a statement plant in a container, these camellias are sure to captivate all who behold them.

For those seeking a more delicate and intricate beauty, the Camellia sasanqua is an excellent choice for full sun gardens. With its smaller, dainty flowers and compact growth habit, this variety is perfect for creating hedges, borders, or even espalier designs. The blooms, ranging from white to shades of pink and red, adorn the dark green foliage, providing a charming contrast. Camellia sasanqua is also known for its early blooming season, adding a splash of color and fragrance to the autumn and winter months.

Apart from its historical and cultural significance, Camellia sinensis can also be grown for its ornamental value in full sun to part shade. The small, fragrant white flowers and glossy, dark green leaves make it an attractive addition to any garden. For those with a penchant for tea, the leaves of this camellia can be harvested and dried to create your very own homegrown tea leaves.

At Nursery Traders, we take pride in offering a wide range of camellias, each with its own distinctive charm and character. From the timeless beauty of Camellia japonica to the delicate allure of Camellia sasanqua, we have the perfect selection to suit every taste and landscape from 140mm to 400mm. We will have limited numbers of 300mm espaliers arriving soon, so stay on the lookout.
