A designer's dream, Strobilanthes gossypinus looks neat all year round and its unique foliage colour and texture contrasts beautifully alongside other plants. The word 'gossypinus' means cotton-like in Latin, which refers to the masses of shiny hairs on the surface of the leaves, providing a shimmering silvery gold appearance in the sunlight.
The Strobilanthes gossypinus performs well in both full sun and shady situations, whether in the garden or in pots or planters. Growing approximately 1m high x 1.5m wide, it can tolerate dry conditions and coastal spots where the furry leaves resist salt laden winds. The only requirement for this plant is a frost-free environment and free draining soil. Whilst its foliage is the feature of this plant, it does produce soft mauve, tubular flowers on elongated panicles above the foliage.
